The final consonant(s) of a syllable (받침) become nasalized when they are followed by a nasal consonant (ㄴ, ㅁ) at the start of the next syllable (aka a “head sound”).  Whether the final 받침 becomes an ㄴ, ㅁ, or ㅇ all depends on the representational sound value of the 받침 (If you want more information on these sound values, 받침, or other basic pronunciation rules, check out my first post on basic pronunciation rules).

If a 받침 with a sound value of ㄱ is followed by an ㄴ  or an ㅁ, it becomes an ㅇ!

ㄱ + ( ㄴ or ㅁ)  >  ㅇ

학년 > [항년]

국민 > [궁민]

엮는 > [영는]

약 먹어 > [양 머거]

If a 받침 with a sound value of ㅂ is followed by an ㄴ  or an ㅁ, it becomes an ㅁ!

ㅂ +  (ㄴ or ㅁ) > ㅁ

입만 > [임만]

없는데 > [엄는데]

앞머리 > [암머리]

밥 먹어요 > [밤머거요]

If a 받침 with a sound value of ㄷ is followed by an ㄴ or an ㅁ, it becomes an ㄴ!

ㄷ + (ㄴ orㅁ)  > ㄴ

몇 년 > [면년]            몇명 > [면명]

끝나다 > [끈나다]

꽃나무 > [꼰나무]

갔는데 > [간는데]
